Local’s Playlist: Summer 2024

1 ) Cherry Spit – “Verb List 1967”

Cherry Spit’s vocalist Cyrena Rosati, previously known as the bassist of the Quits, has a new project that is picking up some steam. The track “Verb List 1967” from Cherry Spit’s demo album exhibits the band’s eclectic taste and angular tendencies, but you really have to see them live to tap into the power of the grumbling bass, the primal trance-like drums, and Cyrena’s piercing shrieks.

2) Earth OK – “Communication Equation”

Earth OK is a band that can make you laugh and cry at the same time. Their stories are bound to hit home as the lead singer AJ Bass speaks on his romantic entanglements, internal philosophical debates, and woes of everyday life. The sentiments in their songs expose a sincere inner yearning for self-realization.

3) MDX View – “Good Grief”

MDX View’s sound is a beautiful amalgamation of deconstructed dance music and pop. The world MDX View creates is phantasmic and ethereal— straddling the line that separates  reality from the other half of existence. They are an active part of Faith Changes the World, a growing Denver collective that puts on highly immersive shows. If you haven’t heard of FCTW, make sure to learn more!

4) Water on the Thirsty Ground – “3”

This track is a highlight from the band’s first full-length album Exploding Head Syndrome. The band founders Blake and Julia are a truly innovative duo pioneering the hyperpop and digital hardcore scene. Their unpredictable arrangements, plethora of unique tones and soundscapes, and unrestrained vocals characterize them as bold, unapologetic artists ready to raise some hell!

 5) Fainting Dreams – “6:59”

This trio is stunningly beautiful, dark, and gloomy with a soft and innocent core. The track “6:59” off of the group’s new album Those Left Untouched By the Light is haunting, swelling with a constant push and pull of tension and release. Elle Reynold’s vocals are masterfully refined as they alternate between a subdued croon to a deafening metal scream.

6) Kelly Garlick – “엄마를 위해 (for mom)”

There is a buzz in Denver about Kelly Garlick, an enigmatic artist with a sound sweet enough to throw you into a daze. But don’t be fooled! When the veil is lifted, their songs often reveal a darkness looming just under the surface. Kelly Garlick’s style is broad and dynamic, chock-full of field recordings, samples, trap beats, swirling synths, and so much more.

7) Ryan Wong -– “Lead Paint”

The track “Lead Paint” from the New Country Sounds of Ryan Wong showcases Ryan Wong’s  lyrical candor, his humble and good-humored poetics, and lighthearted approach to the deeper themes in life. This track washes over you like the warm rays of the sun; your soul is rejuvenated after soaking in his saccharine sonic bath.

8) American Culture/Midwife – “Let it Go”

Now this is an interesting collab! American Culture is one of Denver’s favorite long- standing rock bands. And Midwife? She is practically a local hero, her career born within the walls of the revered DIY venue Rhinoceropolis. Both of these artists together in one track is an unlikely affair and the track itself is a breezy feel-good summer groove with a nostalgic 90s beat.
